Yesterday, I was lucky enough to celebrate my first year anniversary with my wife. October 1st, 2016 was the best day of my life, and a tremendous celebration with friends and family. Our one year mark didn’t enjoy the same intense festivities, but it was special just the same. It allowed me to celebrate one of the best partnerships I have ever made.
As the owner of a small business, I see all the time how much time and effort and money other businesses put into courting potential relationships. There’s a whirlwind of activity to try to attract a partner, mental pictures painted of dreams and achievements, and promises made to meet every need. Signing a deal with a new company is met with fanfare akin to a wedding, with both sides looking forward to wedded bliss together.
The lucky few will have a relationship with no bumps, no conflicts, and no discontent. Unfortunately for most, business and life is rife with missed expectations, broken promises and unfair circumstances. Sales goal projections were too high for March, so our P&L projections were off! New customer acquisitions were down despite this new ad campaign! You left your dirty dishes in the sink!
What makes these situations work is a combination of a few factors:
- Communication is key in all relationships. Understanding the needs of your partner is critical! Understanding what it takes to get them to their goals makes a good partner.
- Humility to admit when you’ve made an error in judgment, or a flat-out mistake, is another. The ability to say “I’m sorry” because you didn’t account for an email drop skewing numbers last year’s sales numbers in this year’s forecasting, or because you hurt her feelings with a careless comment.
- Commitment to making things right, to moving things in the right direction, even if there is a distraction, or a problem. Commitment to building a strong future for your partner, whether that means late hours building out a strategy to work around poor MAP pricing, or sitting in a hospital room waiting for good news to come from an emergency heart surgery.
I’ve spent 16 years in the online partnerships space, working with clients, customers, partners, and vendors make sure they’ve maximized sales, leads, and overall satisfaction with each other. 16 years of helping partners learn, grow, and succeed has helped me be a better partner and businessman. I’m proud to be the owner of a company where we’ve celebrated over one year of business, and can celebrate one year of success with some of our clients that joined in the very beginning.
Just one year together can change the course of your travels and lead to amazing things! Call me today at 888-700-7011 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org so I can show you how.
